Cabo or Puerto Vallarta for Your Destination Wedding?

Why settle for ordinary when you can have extraordinary? Whether you’re dreaming of a cliffside ceremony or a serene beach celebration, West Mexico has the perfect venue waiting for you!

Cabo or Puerto Vallarta is one of the first questions I get from almost every couple who's landed on "somewhere on Mexico's Pacific coast" and then hit a wall. Both are all-inclusive, both are gorgeous, both are a direct flight from most U.S. cities. The differences that actually matter are quieter than a Pinterest board shows you, and they're not really about which one is "better," they're about which one is better for your specific guest list.

Here's the honest comparison, plus straight answers to the questions I hear most.

Cabo or Puerto Vallarta: The Real Differences

Ready to trade tradition for something truly unforgettable? Host your destination wedding along the gorgeous West Coast of Mexico! With its mix of cultural charm, luxurious resorts, and breathtaking scenery, it’s the ultimate place to say “I do.”

Cabo is desert-meets-ocean drama: dusty mountains, cactus, dramatic cliffs, and a more luxury-leaning resort portfolio with a genuinely food-forward dining scene, including a Michelin-starred kitchen. Beaches are the catch: almost none of Cabo's luxury resorts sit on swimmable water, so plan on excellent pools and a short ride to a real beach when guests want to swim. If your wedding falls January through March, Cabo's whale watching season is a genuine draw, a catamaran cruise with humpbacks breaching close enough to feel it.

Puerto Vallarta is jungle-meets-ocean: Sierra Madre mountains dropping straight into Banderas Bay, a walkable historic downtown, and one of Mexico's most genuinely LGBTQ+-welcoming destinations, with decades of real community history behind it. Beaches here are the easier win, Banderas Bay's shape naturally calms the water, so most resorts actually have swimmable beaches on property. Puerto Vallarta also gets a winter whale season, so that's not exclusive to Cabo, it's a Pacific-coast thing both destinations share, unlike Cancun.

Is Cabo or Puerto Vallarta Better?

Neither, honestly, it depends entirely on what your guest list actually wants. Cabo tends to win for couples who want dramatic scenery, a more luxury-leaning resort scene, and don't mind guests treating the pool as the main event. Puerto Vallarta tends to win for couples who want their guests to leave the resort and find a real town waiting for them, plus a destination that's genuinely built around inclusivity rather than claiming it. If you want the short version: Cabo for drama, Puerto Vallarta for depth.

Is Cabo More Expensive Than Puerto Vallarta?

‍Generally, yes. Cabo's resort portfolio skews more luxury on average, and that shows up in package pricing. It's not universal, some Cabo properties sit at a more moderate price point, and some Puerto Vallarta boutique options run high, but as a rule of thumb, budget more for Cabo. Puerto Vallarta tends to land closer to Cancun and Riviera Maya pricing.‍ ‍

Is Cabo or Puerto Vallarta Better for Families?

Both have strong family-friendly resort options with kids' clubs, multiple pools, and swim-up suites. The real difference is what happens outside the resort. Puerto Vallarta gives families a walkable town to explore together, the Malecón, local restaurants, real culture beyond the property line. Cabo leans more toward on-property entertainment and excursions like golf or whale watching. Neither is the wrong answer for a family-heavy guest list, they're just different kinds of family trip.

What's the Difference Between Cabo and Puerto Vallarta, Beyond the Obvious?

The scenery tells you almost everything. Cabo is desert: dry heat, cactus, dramatic rock formations, and a color palette you won't find anywhere else in Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is jungle: humid, green, mountains dropping straight into the bay. That difference shapes everything else, the resort architecture, the food scene, even the wedding photos you'll end up with. Neither is more "authentically Mexico" than the other, they're just different regions with genuinely different personalities.
